VARAGUNAM MEMORIAL ORATION 2022 by Prof. Bodinayake

Congratulations to Prof. Champica Bodinayake on her successful delivery of the Prof. T. Varagunam Memorial Oration at the 6th Annual Academic Sessions of the Sri Lanka College of Internal Medicine (SIMCON 2022), Colombo.  Prof. Champica K. Bodinayake, the Head of the Duke-Ruhuna Collaborative Research Centre, Professor in Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna,  and an adjunct professor at DGHI, Duke University,  delivered the Oration on “Dengue: Past, Present and Future – Exploring Opportunities for Outpatient Case Management,” addressed a highly timely topic and was well received by the audience. The oration was based on three landmark dengue studies conducted in Southern Sri Lanka (2007, 2011/2012, and 2017/2018), reflecting the evolution of dengue epidemiology and clinical management.  The findings highlight the need for improved triage algorithms for outpatient versus inpatient care and inform future research focused on identifying host gene signatures predictive of severe dengue to further advance patient management.
